State Aid Bridge 1921, 2 Views

The State Aid Bridge was the original concrete bridge spannig the Platte River on Hwy 34 at the Hall/Hamilton County line. This structure served until the early 1960�s when it was replaced by the existing bridge. The 2nd photo shows the original wagon bridge across the Platte--this is the bridge which was replaced by the State Aid Bridge.

B-29 Superfortress

The B-29 Superfortress was once a familiar sight in the skies around Grand Island. In 1942 the US Army Air Force leased the Grand Island Airport and established an air base to train crews to fly the new B-29.

The flight crews trained in Grand Island were veteran B-17 crews who had seen action over Europe, and were needed to fly the new, more sophisticated, B-29 in the Pacific Theatre.

The original Director of Flight Operations at the Grand Island Base was Col. Paul Tibbets who, as the pilot of the B-29 Enola Gay, would drop the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945.

Dedication of the New Hwy 30 Viaduct

The crowds are out in force to tour the new viaduct over the Union Pacific tracks on the Lincoln Highway (Hwy 30). Finally, a way to get from one side of town to the other without waiting for a train� no wonder people were excited.
